Chicago Queer Community Mentor Text
The category for this text could fall under informational. Personally, I am not familiar with this topic specifically so I was able to discover new information. I get a vibe of family. The people involved in this mentor text have become close due to their position, and they are there for one another as they familiarize themselves with who they are. I do not believe I am intended for this audience necessarily. I am a part of the audience who are learning, but I believe the true audience is those who are a part of the community. This text informs others of the Chicago queer community and how they developed their family. The text is providing knowledge to the once unknown, and it is teaching others the act of acceptance, as well as personal growth. I do not think an occasion needs to prompt this text. I think this text was written out of need. A need to inform others of their life as an attempt to impact the life of another. There are people who need this kind of support and information, and for that community, it is vital. The speakers of this text are the queer Chicago community. They come together to tell the story of their life and ultimately how they got there. To summarize this text is to say that it is about community. We are all essentially a part of a community, and they describe the community in which they are a part of. An important quote I remember from the text is that “you do not know where you are unless you acknowledge where you are from.” This stood out to me because I often do not like to accept my hard past, but I became who I am through the experiences I endured during those times. They ultimately define who I am.
